Background and context

ALG seeks an experienced fundraiser to join our Business Development team to help grow our commercial funding portfolio. You will work closely with country and technical teams to support identification, positioning, bidding and contracting of tenders from key international development agencies such as the World Bank, United Nations, USAID, FCDO, EU and some bilateral cooperation agencies operating in Africa. As coordinator for ALG’s growing number of consultancy agreements, you will liaise with partners, clients and donors as well as colleagues and associate experts to maximise opportunities and ensure effective management of contractual obligations. You will also collaborate across the organisation to improve our capacity to identify, win and deliver commercial contracts to complement our extensive grant funding portfolio. ​

We are looking for someone expert in commercial tenders, with a proven track record in bringing people together to develop winning bids. You should bring a strong understanding of working with development multilateral and bilateral institutions, a network of suppliers and/or consultants, and an ability to provide technical support and guidance to colleagues in different country or region contexts.

The position sits within our global Business Development team and is open to applicants to be based in ou new multi-country coordination unit in Accra (Ghana). Working patterns vary between contexts, but flexible working arrangements are available including remote working, compressed hours and part time options.

Role duties and responsibilities:

Lead on opportunity identification and positioning for commercial contracts

  • Liaise with country, regional and technical teams to identify priority funding areas and build a strong commercial pipeline
  • Scan and identify suitable funding opportunities and share across ALG including attending early market engagement events
  • Build and maintain relationships with international development funders and contractors to position ALG as a preferred contractor or sub-contractor
  • Identify and partner with local and international firms to increase ALG’s technical and managerial capabilities
  • Support pre-bid partnership positioning and consortium building
  • Facilitate strategic go/no-go decision making.

Coordinate project design and bid development for commercial funding opportunities in collaboration with country, regional and global teams

  • Coordinate the bid development process for commercial tender opportunities including programme delivery contracts, framework bids and consultancies
  • Support consortium building and partner liaison as required
  • Provide written inputs to tender documents and gather relevant information e.g. CVs, compliance documents
  • Work closely with finance and operations colleagues to ensure quality financial/commercial proposals in line with donor requirements
  • Provide donor-specific guidance to support effective targeting and tailoring of bids and ensure donor compliance

Act as framework coordinator for ALG’s framework agreements

  • Be the focal point for partners within ALG’s framework agreements including lead partner liaison (where ALG is a sub)
  • Monitor and share draw down opportunities, facilitating go/no-go processes and ensuring compliance with agreed timeframes
  • Coordinate bid development process for framework tenders
  • Provide guidance and support internally to ensure all relevant teams are well briefed in framework contracts
  • Monitor framework performance and provide periodic reports to key colleagues

Help strengthen ALG’s approach to identify and secure commercial contracts

  • Collaborate with relevant colleagues to sharpen ALG’s offer, and ensure ALG has up-to-date capacity statements in all relevant areas
  • Keep up to date on new rules and ways of working with key donors, and share important intel with colleagues
  • Collaborate with ALG’s functional teams colleagues to support systems strengthening and ensure donor/client compliance for commercial contracts

Collaborate with the wider Business Development team on learning and cross-organisational initiatives

  • Ensure the CRM is updated with relevant information
  • Provide training and learning opportunities for colleagues on commercial contracts
  • Contribute to the maintenance of the organisation’s funding pipeline
  • Participate in and provide input to regular team meetings, technical meetings and the fundraising community of practice.
  • Contribute to team and organisation planning and strategy development.

Salary is commensurate to experience and qualifications.
